The New York Times (NYT) Slashes Dividend

After the market closed today the New York Times announced it would cut its dividend from 23 cents a share to 6 cents, which will save the company $97.8 million a year. Lord knows they need the cash. It probably would have been wise to cut the dividend to zero, but this is still a big step in the right direction. The stock now sits at $5.72 a share.

Full Release:

The New York Times Company’s Board of Directors today declared a quarterly dividend of $.06 per share on the Company’s Class A and Class B common stock, down from $.23 per share in the third quarter of 2008. The dividend is payable on December 15, 2008, to shareholders of record on December 1, 2008.

‘This was a difficult but necessary decision that will provide us with greater financial flexibility in these uncertain economic times,’ said Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., chairman of the Company. ‘Most industries are feeling the need to conserve cash and ours is as well, particularly given the secular challenges we face. Throughout our history, we have successfully weathered difficult periods by maintaining our brand promise of providing high-quality journalism. In order to continue to do so, we have taken decisive steps to reduce capital spending, lower operating costs and re-evaluate our assets. We expect that this steep cut in the dividend, coupled with our other actions, will help us decrease debt and improve the liquidity of the Company, a prudent measure in this operating environment.’

dave kidd has reported in today’s people newspaper, that the ecb’s preparation plans for next summer’s ashes series could be thrown into turmoil necessary to england players refusing to sign their central contracts.manifestly the england players elected not to cypher the contracts until after the stanford match (and we all know how that went). the england players feel miffed that they lost their ?650,000 per man harmonize and afterward came away from the west indies with nothing.the centrally-contracted players manipulate that they are missing out on some big money that is on offer from the ipl (indian premier league). of movement the ecb did try and replace the draw in of the ipl with the stanford match, however, as was proven; if a line-up loses that one-off match the players walk away with nothing, compared with the guaranteed income/wages on offer from ipl franchises.the ecb would rather only made the contracted players handy to the ipl for twelve days next spring.that decision by the ecb has led ipl franchise owners to exhort that they will not be employing any centrally-contracted england players next season.this in dwelling-place fighting could seriously disrupt the england teams preparations after next summer’s ashes series. let’s upon the players and the ecb can sort something absent from and reach an agreement.

Is Mark Teixeira worth $20 million or more per year?

i had an break to talk to super agent scott boras thursday as i was preparing a occasional free-instrument stories. and, yes, we spoke about watch teixeira. we’ll get to him in a second. but i want to state this — though i be sure it won’t sit well with multifarious of you. i enjoy talking to boras. he’s extremely sharp, motivated and impressive. it’s not a inscrutableness why he is so good at what he does. as a sportswriter, boras is among the most fascinating people i have met. off the best of my head, the only ones that come close are chuck thompson and, drum roll please, peter angelos. my consider fair rating straight dropped 30 points. (how many of you are going to hammer me for mentioning chuck in the same category as angelos and boras? ain’t the beer loving, in a trice?) i am not buddies with either attorney. and i’m not endorsing them or their philosophies. i am solely saying they are both incredibly interesting men with informed, albeit unwavering, opinions. interviewing them is like a game of chess. it can be simultaneously illuminating, fun and frustrating. ok, i am now taking a spot under the save for, hiding behind a stool with mike in indiana who had the audacity to suggest in thursday’s talk that he believes teixeira will be this free agency class’ biggest bust. here’s his logic: “(tex) is going to get an a-rod-in-texas type contract in the service of a bunch of money and a bunch of years. while he is a good hitter is he really going to make the difference? he didn’t help atlanta or the angels in the form two years. i think that for the money he is going to get, his performance is not going to guaranty a championship (see also: alex rodriguez).” after talking to boras yesterday, i on predict you that mike is correctly in one aspect. teixeira is going to come close to the $252 million arod got in 2000. he won’t excel it, but i bet he is not far from there. boras won’t make predictions or offer any parameters, but in the way he is talking, it’s easy to read between the lines. my sense is that boras sees teixeira as a $20 million-plus competitor, and he large gets what he wants. so here’s my interview: if you are the orioles, do you make amends for the faithful grail of severna park $20 million-plus a year for eight to 10 years to come severely? think about this: if the orioles would, he’d roughly feign whole-fourth of the club’s entire payroll. sure, he’d make this team think twice. but is it worth it at that expense? boras contends that whatever tex gets in salary the brotherhood will recoup that revenue in marketing, ticket sales and increased profile. “it’s just well-thought-of business to go after players that not only won’t be a detriment to your payroll but last will and testament pay for themselves. not many players can do that. he will,” boras said. so should the orioles pay for tex, no matter how uneven it makes their payroll? daily think noteworthy: if you owned the orioles, would you give mark teixeira $20 million or more a year to play at digs? in a baseball context, is he worth that price?

We owe each of them a debt of gratitude that can never truly be repaid. They are there for us, and we need to be there for them. To be there for them means a certain commitment, and I ask each and every citizen to take the time to learn the resources and services that are available to support our troops as they re-enter the civilian community.”

The ceremony was presented by the Braintree Veterans Council (BVC) under the auspices download thriller of American Legion Post 86, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1702, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 29 to honor all veterans, living and dead.

We remember those veterans who served America by fighting and dying on the field of battle.”

Before she received a standing ovation, O’Sullivan concluded, “To my fellow veterans, my shipmates, and your families, I thank you for what you have paid for the cost of our freedom. I thank you for you have emptied yourselves in the giving. I thank you for the faith you hold in those of us who continue to serve, not always in uniform, and follow in your legacy. I thank you for the love you have for freedom and for your service to America that will one day lead to a lasting peace.”

Secretary of state usa

After a benediction by Dupuis, Driscoll presented O’Sullivan with a resolution passed by the state House of Representatives and state Senate saluting her “commitment to improving the lives of veterans.”

Barnes paid tribute to four World War II veterans in attendance: George Ward, Dave Lovell, Emmett McNamara, and Phyllis Nuss

When the veteran organizations retired their colors, Barnes invited the audience for refreshments at the American Legion Post 86 on 435 Washington St.
